Themes
You can turn off all the pretty, but CPU sucking events, and the theme. This will free up some resources and help the system run smoothly.
- Right click on My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab.
- Click on "Settings" under "Performance"
- Click "Adjust for best performance" and click Ok and Ok.
This turns off all the graphical effects such as shadows and animations. This also reverts you to the "Windows Classic" theme, and makes it look like Windows 2000. You can still turn the XP basic theme back on, and keep the perfomance settings the way they are:
- On the desktop, right click and select "Properties"
- Choose "Windows XP" in the theme drop down and click Ok.
Background & Desktop Icons
If you really want to squeeze another 1% of memory usage, use a solid color background instead of a picture. Also delete all your unused icons. The more icons on the desktop, the more Windows has to load. Consider using the quick launch toolbar or the start menu more instead of the desktop.
MSConfig
This is a very useful utility for tweaking. We will do a few things here to help out the system: Go to Start and type: msconfig and press Enter.
Startup Items
- Go to the "Startup" tab.
- You can pretty much disable everything except what you know for sure you want starting (like MSN messenger or printer/scanner services)
